‘York Fire – Dusk IV’, monoprint, 30x35cm
£200.00
I made this small ‘dusk’ series to emphasise the fragility of both Eastern & Western Joshua Trees,
vulnerable in their restricted desert habitats to climate change, wildfires, and associated issues with poor seed dispersal and germination.
Spending time getting the base blends of this little series just right – a luminous light, plus a solidity to the shadowed land…
I then worked quickly on the tree to give a contrast with the stark reality of the environment. With this final part of the print, I’ve used c.30% printing medium to c.70% acrylic, so it’s quite loose and translucent, and allows some light to pass through the tree.
I started doing these blends a few years ago to relay the uncertainty at the end of a day. This was partly inspired by childhood memories of the ‘Rite of Springs’ from the Disney epic ‘Fantasia’, the end of which describes the extinction of the dinosaurs.
A dusk-like blended backdrop was used throughout this part of the animation.
