This is my second lament to the 2023 York Fire in the Mojave National Preserve, which devasted a huge swathe of pristine Joshua Tree country.
The main plants in this one aren’t Joshua Trees but the closely related Mojave Yucca. The Joshua Trees present here are tiny ghost prints in white, echoes of the trees we have lost already and could lose forever.
On the right side of the picture, there is also a ghost print of its extinct symbiont, the Shasta Ground Sloth.
I had something of a battle trying to create and recreate the silhouettes of the trees after I removed an excess of masked filler that I’d laid down too heavily. The process of ‘knocking’ this back has left some adorable sculptural, raised marks that have given a nice representation of an old Yucca trunk and its dead fronds, allowing me to print on the light of the fire raging around it.
‘York Fire II – Dusk’ was selected for the 2024 Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and was also in co-founder Jack Bullen’s Director’s Picks from this Fair.

Prints can be custom-framed at cost price here in Dartmouth on request.
Smaller prints are flat-packed, while larger works are carefully rolled and shipped in sturdy tubes. Packaging is protective and largely plastic-free.

We love the drama and dynamics of the work. It is both beautiful and haunting. The flames are rendered in a really ingenious way. There is a mystery of what might be depicted. This is a very evocative piece and beautifully executed!
