The idea for ‘Merapi’ germinated after a night hike up Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on my birthday in 2013.
The group I was in set off just after midnight in torrential rain, and we sheltered in a cave just beneath the ‘dead zone’ [which stretches upwards for a kilometre – Merapi is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on earth] before the weather was clear enough to reach the summit Once we reached there, the Guide texted on his phone to confirm to the ‘base’ office that we’d topped out. I took several photos at that point, where he happened to be in the frame.
The juxtaposition of someone using their mobile phone ‘as normal’ whilst in the most wondrous, beautiful & primitive environment struck a real chord with me.
It was one of the most exhausting things I’ve ever done [I’d barely recovered from a ruptured patella tendon op 6 months previously – but without doubt one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
As per most of my work from this time, I used photographic & reproductive printing techniques to ruminate over the self-inflicted demise Mankind faces within our Anthropocene era & our behaviour within it
