‘Brownstone Pine IV [Stump #248]’, 71cm x 100cm, Monoprint, Acrylic & Ink on Fabriano Rospina 300gsm.
This is my latest large mixed media print of one of the giant Monterrey Pines near Froward Point/Brownstone, by the mouth of the Dart in Devon, and was done as a partner to the ‘Brownstone Pine III’ . I’ve again focused on their very anthropomorphic, twisted forms, & with both prints (& the first of the mini-series) been obsessing on their tendency to self-immolate in maturity to allow the next generation to be realised & thrive.

the main body of the tree was achieved by doing multiple gelliplate prints over a hand-cut stencil; I then used masking fluid to protect these dense, silhouette blacks; and then overlayed lighter blacks & greys to describe the detail of the scorched bark. & then… the key seems to be knowing when to stop!
with this tree, I particularly love its balding crown, which is valiantly clinging on to life…
‘Brownstone Pine IV’ recently sold via my ‘Help Build The Print Shed’ Crowdfunder.
